Mac malware is growing faster than nasties going for Windows

Describing this as an "exponential" increase, the firm said that detections of nasties targeted against innocent Apple fanbois were up 400 per cent year-on-year, while adding the caveat that its Mac userbase had also grown a bit.

Personally have no experience as I still run Win or Nix ... but report was sufficiently alarming to pass along.

The article is about lame user-added browser extensions that deliver ads. Not at all the same as virus malware. 400% of 1 is 4 but it sounds yuge. There is no OS that protects the silly user from being inconvenienced. ;)

Adware likes Apple because those users are more valuable individual conversions.
Malware likes Windows and Android because there are more of them. And the attack surface is greater.

That said, I tend to look at the publisher and whether they include the raw numbers especially when playing with percentages. This is a ‘news’ summary of a marketing report so extra caution should be applied.
Note: the idiocy of playing up ‘Macs get sick too’ is rather old hat theRegister, get a grip already.

All I know is I don't use antivirus on my mac and have no issues and on my windows machines it's a necessary staple.
