Apple will acquire “the majority” of Intel’s smartphone modem business for $1 billion, the two companies announced today (July 25). Around 2,200 Intel employees will join Apple, and Apple will acquire IP and equipment from Intel as well. The transaction is expected to close toward the end of the year.

Analysts quoted by Bloomberg at the time suggested that Apple’s in-house modems could be ready in three years.

The main reason that I'm posting this is that there is an ongoing conversation in the Google Serps thread about vertical integration on the software side of Apple. Basically people are suggesting that Apple should buy DDG or others to have its own search engine. What this article shows is that yes Apple is vertically integrating its supply chain, but they are not focused on software but rather the hardware side. Furthermore it appears that this is a general trend in the industry with the likes of Amazon, Google and Tesla all looking to build their own chips. This is discussed in detail in this segment from NPR's Market Place:

This agreement to purchase the Intel technology came up as a way to close out a long term legal disagreement between the two companies. It appears from out here to have been a good idea, far better than paying $1 billion to the legal team to continue the disagreement where there is no decisive win for either side without spending more time and money.
