Apple's latest iPhone may have a full-face display, if the latest patent it's awarded is anything to go by. As with so many smartphones, they all tend to look very similar, and without the branding it's often difficult for the average smartphone user to tell what's what. This latest patent looks as if Apple is attempting to differentiate its technology, and to protect its development.

Awarded by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Apple's U.S. Patent No. 9,543,364 for "Electronic devices having displays with openings" describes a method by which various components can be mounted behind perforations in a device screen that are so small as to be imperceptible to the human eye. This arrangement would allow engineers to design a smartphone or tablet with a true edge-to-edge, or "full face," display. Apple Patent For Full, Edge-to-Edge Display on iPhones [appleinsider.com]

Rats! I thought it would be full bleed technology (extending beyond the visible area) ... Oh well. :)

From a cartography point of view this does make a difference, but the question remains will the USER see and know the difference? Waiting for shiny examples to make comparisons.
