can't get mail function in network

I have 2 G3's running OSX, connected by ethernet. When my wife and I were running OS9 we used Vicomsoft SurfDoubler to use internet browser and mail. Took time but it worked out well.

Since OSX change over she can get browser function with MS Explorer but not Safari. She can't get any mail programs to work. It says it can't locate server and something about a port.

Is there something I need to know? Someplace to learn? Software I need?

Any help would reduce the whine level and ease my frustration.

Thanks

I could be wrong, but from what I am reading its sounds like your email settings are not configured.

Switch to OS 9 and go to email settings, if you were using Outlook its under tools >accounts.
write down the settings.

switch back to OS X, open your mail program and enter the settings in the relevant places - you are now ready to go.

System Preferences>INTERNET>select the EMAIL tab> select default email reader, fill in the blanks there.
