Safari to Dump Google and Use Yahoo! Search?

From page 2 on MacRumors, where they report less concrete rumors.

"According to one report, Yahoo is presently in negotiations with Apple to replace the Google-driven Search box in Apple's Web Browser (Safari) with one powered by Yahoo's search engine.

Apple's web browser offers a built in search box in the top right corner window which allows users to quickly search the web. Since Safari's introduction, the search box has used Google's popular search engine to provide results.

Google's prominent placement is presumably provided for convenience rather than any specific financial deal between the two companies."

Just an interesting tidbit ... would you all rather search using Yahoo! or Google, or maybe have both built in to Safari?

This is why I use Camino (URL substitution makes it easy to have Google and Yahoo! searches from the link bar). However, Apple should be getting some money from whoever they put on Safari.

It would be really handy if they had a pull down for different types of searching:

* Web
* Phone number
* Map

And so on.

I'd want whomever is providing the best SERPs, and right now, I have to say that's still Google, although it would be a less-than-ringing endorsement.

The ability to choose would be a nice addition, too. :)

I agree that choices would be really nice and make more sence, unless Apple was getting some coinage for the trouble.

It would be really cool if they left the field in the top to search, but have a menu to choose which engine you want to search. Plus a way to add new engines would be cool.

I agree...
Why should we be limited to just one company of choice for our search?

When I first saw the search box in Safari I quickly clicked on the search icon (located to the to the left of the search box), hoping to see other search engines listed for my choice of search.

Apple falls short of 'thinking' here in my opinion.

There should be several engine options for users in a simple dropdown menu.

. . not as simple as a dropdown menu but you can hack the safari search quite a bit - it is possible to make it search with other engines have a look at:

Thanks for the link ram_mac.

I subscribe to their feed, but somehow I missed that great tip. Now I'm off to configure Safari to use Overture's suggestion tool.
