As reported in Bloomberg News [bloomberg.com]

Steve Jobs... said he is suffering from a nutritional ailment and that he plans to remain Apple Inc.’s chief executive officer during his treatment.

"I have been losing weight throughout 2008. The reason has been a mystery to me and my doctors," Jobs, who turns 54 in February, said today in a statement. "After further testing, my doctors think they have found the cause -- a hormone imbalance that has been ‘robbing’ me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy."

The company has come a long way since Jobs returned to Apple. Could it get along without him?

I think the company will do well without Steve. He would be sorely missed and the stock will unquestionably nosedive if anything would happen to him, but it would recover.

Yes he is a visionary, but I think others in the company will have the ability to step in and continue on the same path.

Steve has had ample opportunity to surround himself with people that are able to carry on. He's been seriously ill in the past so it's not like this is an overnight thing for him, the company or the stockholders or any other stakeholder.

In a far past Apple did bad when Steve left, but I doubt if it would be the same this time round. Smart people do learn from past failures.
