ITunes 2.0.4 / OS 9.2.2 / Toast 5.1 problem

Anyone successfully using ITunes 2.0.4 with OS 9.2.2?
I got a loan of a friends' Lacie cd-rw hoping to burn some MP3 discs, and had a pretty frustrating weekend; tried everything I could think of, but iTunes just wouldn't recognise the burner :-(
I'm using Toast Titanium 5.1.1, and got as far as being able to copy discs, but even trying to copy over the MP3 files from ITunes wouldn't work properly.
Any suggestions, or specialist forums I could go to?

I believe there is a forum on the Apple website in the support section, but it may be that iTunes is trying to enforce copyrights. I've been told that the $0.99 downloads through iTunes are not transportable to MP3 format. This means that even if you buy the download you can't put it on your generic MP3 player.
