Opera is by far the best Browser I ever used on my Windows PC, but it lacks so many features and is downright slow and quirky on Macs.

Wich dont leave us many choices...

So what browser is your favorite if you use a Mac?

I use both Explorer and Netscape; the ratio is about 80/20. Never tried Opera.

Hi buckworks,

I would be interested to know if your 20 % use Netscape is for professionnal quality control or for your own personal browsing usage. Also, wich version of Netscape do you use?

Thanks

IE 5 on Mac followed by NN 4.7 .

I don't use the mac for regular work - it's only for testing.

Professional quality control vs. personal surfing - about half and half. The personal surfing is a site-by-site thing - I tend to surf in IE unless I come across a site that looks or behaves badly, then I try it in Netscape.

I think the biggest reason I use IE more often is the difference in how they handle the "history" if you have multiple windows open. IE's way of listing the browser history is more convenient.

On this machine I have IE 5.1 and Netscape 4.7.

Chimera (a Mozilla-based browser) seems to be popular with Macolytes. It's supposedly about twice as fast as any other MacOS X-based browser.

Opera - less features, less stable

Explorer - very reliable, the one i use the most

NN 4.7 - very limiting

NN6.x - no,no,no

NN7 preview - actually quite stable and quick with some cool stuff on it.

Internet Exploder 5.1.4: everyday use. I wish there was a good replacement, but most everything else that runs under OS X crashes when I do a search on Overture.com...a requirement for our biz.

OmniWeb shows promise, however. Netscape Aggrivator/Mozilla may be good also. Both seem faster than IE.

The problem with using one for one thing and one for another is keeping all of my Favorites/Bookmarks up to date. And, the Java(script) problems of the others kill me. I might as well use the most compatible, IE, even if it is slower.

Similar here... I use Opera mostly. If it won't work in Opera, and it's important or very interesting, I'll try IE... if IE won't work AND it's very important, I'll try Netscape 4.7 next, and if the site still won't work I take my business elsewhere. :)

I use all three for site testing.

Since NN7 PR 1 got released, I admit it became my default browser on Macs. I think it's simply the best around. I believe it's almost as good as Opera for Windows.

I really don't need complicated browsers. My criteria for a browser is simple. Simple to use, Loads/Works fast, Good Favourites/Bookamarks Maintenace.

These are the browsers i currently test:

I.E. 5.1 - basically by habit since i've just crossed over from 8 years using a PC now I'm on imac G4 800 OSX - but its stable , pretty quick but the Favourites unlike the PC are more difficult to organise so I use the Scrap Book more since its more like the favourites on a pc using I.E.6. Uses 20 MB disk Space

Opera - yep it is pretty fast and i really like it, its got a good layout of toolbars and buttons. The Bookmarks/(favourites) take a bit to get used to if you're used to Explorer. Uses a phenominally small 4.4 MB disk Space

Mozilla - It automatically imports your favourites from I.E. 5.1 excellent - its got really naff tool bars thought (graphically) I know that graphics aren't really important compared to functionality and performance but Useability is high on my list. Uses 34.4 MB disk Space Ouch

Chimera - i've just installed it after reading this forum, WOW - performs as good as mozilla (obviously) but looks much better, and its Toolbars are Simply Layed out Nice looking. Only takes 19 MB disk space

Netscape 6
Just intalled it - looks good slower than all the rest, imports I.E. Favourites , stable - all in all very good its just sluggish to use though. Oh and it takes a whopping 30.7 MB of disk space

Summary
Opera and Chimera are generally the fastest although on one particular site Mozilla will load up faster than Opera and I.E. (wierd) Chimera still loads just as fast though

I.E.5.1. best all-round browser

Chimera - Second best very fast Looks great, but

Opera doesn't display some sites correctly but is genrally v.fast

Not the best written review I know but i hope it helps somebody in some way.

I say try them all out. I would never attempt this on any PC but Macs are f'ing gorgeous I'm completely in love with mine now -

- Hardly use IE 5.1 anymore, although it was my default browser a few months ago.
At the moment, I use Opera. Have tried NN7 - pretty quick and stable.
Once in a while, I use Maclynx or Wannabe (text browsers)

IE 5.2 just came out and it has quartz rendering of fonts now, so I must say that it is my new favorite browser. Chimera is my second favorite.

macguru,

"Opera is by far the best Browser I ever used on my Windows PC, but it lacks so many features and is downright slow and quirky on Macs"

i couldn't agree more - i've just started using it on my pc at work and its fantastic, i use it 60% of the time and 40% IE6 - on the PC not the MAC

"Since NN7 PR 1 got released, ...... I think it's simply the best around."

I take it you're talking about on the mac

Have you tried Chimera yet?

>>Have you tried Chimera yet?

Not yet. But I read so many good things about it I wont resist for long. Especially that I recently experienced a severe crash and burn with NN7. Is Chimera MacOSX only?

Only one mention of OmniWeb - looked at it once. Predominantly use IE but would like to use Opera more often, it is a nice browser, but not enough people viewing our site with it yet (although we saw a large increase last month)

I check with NS6 occassionally, and even less with NS4.x
