The Associated Press has launched a new iPhone version of its online portal. By visiting apnews.com, visitors will find it contains not just AP news but material from over 100 media outlets, covering topics such as breaking events, business and entertainment.

The iPhone edition of the portal is optimized for the iPhone's display ratio, and features distinct navigation buttons. A special section is devoted to photo browsing, and users can also view video footage. News articles can be customized based on any location.

The iPhone is just the start, of course.

I was at the announcement of this program in Washington DC a few weeks ago and have talked with some of the developers. What's interesting about this is how they are going to use this to push out local news and attempt to sell ads across their mobile network.

AP is trying to play catch-up. They see mobile as a second chance to get it right.
