It's finally officially been announced by Apple. Leopard will be available on the 26th of this month.

Will you wait for a while or install it right away? Are there usually stability issues with brand new releases?

Either way, I'm to curious to wait, I'll buy and install my copy as soon as it hits the shelves :D

I'll be waiting to see if Leopard runs sprightly on antiquated hardware like mine.

Does anyone know, all the cool new web stuff they're talking about on Server (e.g., Ruby) is that also on the workstation OS X (without the nifty GUI admin tools, as usual)?

Luna, please do lay it out for us. We'll be waiting. You can pre-order and be the first on your block.

LizaJane,

Why not buy the "Family Pack" and upgrade up to 5 computers for $199 instead of $129?

I have a feeling that timemachine is going to eat up a ton of space, so it might not be great for older computers with smaller harddrives. If it let's you get back every version of every old file, it means it has to keep a copy, albeit compressed somewhere.

Beyond that, I am really pulling for ZFS support :-).

I just installed on Friday night so my fist impressions are mostly just the basic visual elements, I haven't had time yet to really poke around or do a lot of work / testing.

Overall I like it a lot. I went with a clean install and migrated my programs over (decided to go with that after installing a few of my apps and realizing it was going to take way longer than I wanted), most arrived fine. Parallels will need reinstalled however (Grr at needing to check sites in IE).

It's definitely faster, Safari opens in one bounce now! Everything feels snappier. :)

First impressions:

- Finder's coverflow is pretty, now sure how useful it will be for me. The icon previews however are very handy! I'm surprised however that SVG's aren't supported, Safari has SVG support, but no finder preview... too bad :(

- Path bar in Finder is great! It isn't on by default, if you want it it's in View -> Path Bar. Files and folders can be dropped anywhere on the path to be moved.. for me, very handy.

- Time Machine was a snap to set up. Plugged in external drive, it asked if I wanted Time Machine set up and if yes, on which partition... that was it. I tested it a few hours later and I can see that saving me many headaches in the future.

- Spaces will often be helpful, it's a bit dizzying, but it's another feature I'll be using a lot when I get back down to working.

- Folders in the Dock (Stacks) are now spring loaded.

- Help menu now has a search feature, could be useful... I've already started using it to search bookmarks.

- Spotlight is super speedy now and has calculator built right in. :) For someone like me that's challenged with even the most basic math.. that's a huge plus!

What don't I like? The transparent finder bar... yuck! I thought I'd get used to it, maybe even like it... nope! I'm using a temporary fix to make it less irritating, I added a solid bar of color at the top of my wallpaper image. Also the icon shadows in the dock are.. umm... odd. Fixed that by putting the dock back to the left side where I usually have it.

Like I said, I haven't had time yet to really use Leopard so my fist impressions are mostly visual.

Summed up... feels much faster and has some great features! Happy to have installed it as soon as I got back from the Apple store.

Thanks Luna. Very useful.

I'm not that excited, but I like being state of the art right now. For so long I just plugged along with an old machine, soon I discovered that I was missing out on all the web had to offer. I had an old client in the office this week looking at our current set up and he said, "Wow, that would have been useful on our projects." Um, yeah. It would have been.

Still, I wonder if I will see the pace of needed upgrades will ever slow down.

One problem for me, almost all of my Yahoo widgets and many of my Dashboard widgets either stopped working all together or are so messed up that they are useless.

I had not realized how dependent I was on my calendar, stock updates and weather being right there on my desktop.

That's not good about the Yahoo widgets. But, Apple has all of those widgets, ya know.

I installed OS 10.5 yesterday here at the office. Took about two hours, but I was on the phone.

It is faster. Enough so that you notice. And, while I had no gripes before, that's nice.

"Stacks" fan is stupid as far as I'm concerned. But, otherwise, this OS is impressive.

Seeing tiny icons of the PDFs and documents is "cool" and will be very useful at times. Apple now excels at allowing you to find stuff on your computer quickly and easily. In many businesses, that's vital. People stuck with Windows are going to drool over this.

But what made me laugh is "spaces." It's not as useful as the tiny icons, but it is so cool. I was once a multi-screen user, but instead got a "big" screen. But "spaces" beats all. It's great on the big screen, but it will be fantastic on laptop.

I really didn't want to say "wow." It's just a computer. But, it rates a "wow."

MacFitIt is running a list of problems. The most serious one here as far as my shop is concerned is the rumor (no details yet) of problems with Photoshop 7.

My advice after about a week with 10.5.

Wait. There are several minor but useful apps it's not working with on my machine. And, overall, this is not a major improvement. But, after all of the bugs get worked out, it's a good value for the price.
