Upload Problems

Can't overwrite files

I wonder if anyone can help with this strange problem. I am using an iBook running OS 10.2.6 and I have virtual hosting. When I try to overwrite a file that is already on the server, it appears to upload but instead of overwriting the old version of the file, the file seems to be deleted but is apparently not overwritten. It still appears on the server with a size of 0k. This happens with Dreamweaver MX, Fetch and BBEdit. I am at the end of my tether trying to figure it out. Please someone tell me what's wrong and that everything is going to be okay.

Many thanks in advance.

Sounds like a permissions problem on the server. Are you getting any kind of error messages?

Yes, it does sound like a Permissions problem on the server.

Do tell:
1-Can you delete files normally?
2-Can you copy files up normally if they are NOT replacing an older version?

Is your server also an OS X box?

Yes, I thought it might be a permissions problem but the only way I know to set permissions is with Fetch and when I tried to do this it returned an error something like ' SITE [sic] will not allow...[something ore other]". Sorry to be so vague but the problem is actually on my girlfriend's machine which I'm not around just now. But it wouldn't let me set file permissions or access permissions. I'm pretty sure that you can simply delete files and I'm pretty sure you can upload a file successfully if it's not already there. This is the case for a number of different servers, including one that I have no problem with using a G4 desktop running OS 9.0.4 and Ultradev. Thanks for helping. I'm very close to buying one of the new 15" powerbooks and I would be using it a lot to update my site but these types of complications have unnerved me a bit! :(

Here's an idea. Instead of booting up fetch, go to Connect to Server in the Finder (Apple-K) and type
ftp://ohno.notan.url
in the address bar (of course replacing the fake URL with the desired one). You should get prompted for your ID and password.

Then checking out permissions is as easy as Apple-i.

If that doesn't work, get back to us with the exact errors, etc.

BTW, sorry to be dense, but is the server you are trying to connect to your machine?

Thanks for all the help. I'll give this a go and let you know how I get on. The server isn't my machine, It's somewhere else with some hosting company or other.

Hello! I'm the girlfriend with the problem.
Thank you so much for your help so far. Still some complications:

Tried to connect to server as instructed and received the authentication box asking for my user name and password. While I'm typing in this info there is a scrolling bar at top left hand corner of my screen saying connecting... but as soon as I've hit OK all disapears and hitting applei only brings up my desktop permissions.

Galaga and I have concluded that I'm not making it onto the server. What am I doing wrong?
I'm new to all of this (as you can gather!) so apologies if I'm doing something really silly.

I really appreciate your help!

Yo "Girlfriend"!

It seems odd that the connection would disappear without an error message. You might be getting in but not realizing it. Is it possible you actually logged in but just don't see the "server volume"?

(It should show up as an icon with a globe in the "Computer" window, or on the desktop. It looks a lot like any other server you might log into.)

Thank you very much Timster!
Appologies for taking so long, I've been surfing all weekend! It's a hard life.

You were indeed correct: under 'computer' I found 'network' in which I found the alias for 'servers' applei brought up the ownership and permissions but I seem unable to change them.

Owner: system
Access: No access
Group: wheel
access: no access
others: no access

when I unlock the padlock, 'owner' and 'group' become editable, so I tried to change the owner to mycomputer(ME). Up popped authorisation box for computer password but then Error - The Operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occured (error code 30)
Should I be changing the owner to something else?
I have no idea what wheel means but its clear I do not have access permissions!

Any further suggestions? (no surfing trips planned, I will be strapped to the keyboard!)

Good work. By finding the FTP icon, we know you are connected to the FTP server.

Go ahead and double click that FTP server icon. If it lets you in, look at the other folders. If you click around enough, you may find the folder you have access to. You can try dragging files to and from that folder.

On a slightly different subject, it may make your life easier to set up server volumes (like that FTP server) to show up on your desktop when you connect to them. To do this:
1-Click on the desktop background to enter the Finder
2-Click "Finder" in the upper left of the screen and drag down to "Preferences"
3-Make sure the "Connected Servers" checkbox (third from top) is checked.

(Finding out permissions on the server is just information -- you won't have access to change the permissions on the server (any server). Whoever owns the server takes care of that.)

ok I'm starting to feel really thick!

There is a tick in the 'connected servers' box, and it's not popping up on the desktop. And when I double click the alias 'servers' I get an alias to 'my-compter.local.' I don't understand that at all!

This is all clearly over my head! If I can't change the permissions on the server how am I going to get round not being able to over write files? The web site I'm building is getting rather large and I'd really like to be able to use the synchronize button. Remembering what I've updated and putting it up manually with a PC (using smartFTP - which can overwrite files but can't cope with the synchronize thing) is getting very laborious!
Do I have to go the server people to change my permissions?
Apologies for misunderstanding all this. On the Dreamweaver course they teach you all about what the program can do and then 2 minutes before the end they say "Oh yeah and to upload your newly constructed website hit the upload button, its that easy" - clearly, or in my case! not.

Please persevere with me, it would make my life so much simpler if I understood what was going on!

>>is a tick in the 'connected servers' box, and it's not popping up on >>the desktop. And when I double click the alias 'servers' I get an alias >>to 'my-compter.local.' I don't understand that at all!

Neither do I , but let's not worry about it too much. Maybe you can find a local Machead to look at your machine some time.

>>Do I have to go the server people to change my permissions?

They would be the ones. But if you're saying you can overwrite the files from another computer, that says to me there's not really a problem with the permissions.

It sounds more like your Synchronize program is doing something wrong. Is that part of Dreamweaver? This is where I'd look to solve the problem. (But unfortunately, I don't know anything about the program.)

>>Remembering what I've updated and putting it up manually with a PC >>...is getting very laborious!

Is there are reason you can't just replace the whole Web site periodically? Then you don't have to remember and upload particular files.

>>Please persevere with me, it would make my life so much simpler if I >>understood what was going on!

Many Web designers never learn these sort of tecnical details. You'll have an advantage if you do learn about it, but don't expect it to happen overnight.

Ok Problem Solved!
Or not really solved just an adequate solution uncovered!

Went to see a local mac head as suggested, and found an absolute gem! Acutally discovered the guy through a crazy PCWorld connection but its a long story.

At the start of my problem I was deleting files and just uploading the new ones. Then started working on a new (and much larger) site on a different server. After a short while it became too time consuming to delete and upload so starting using Smart FTP from a PC (After discovering that fetch, transmit and bbedit weren't much help either) During this period I suddenly couldn't delete anything anymore off the server (using smart FTP or dreamweaver) So.... solution is RBrowserLite! I had tried to use to pro version on a trial and failed to get it to work, my mac head man then adviced the lite version and explained the whole binary thing. And presto! Allows overwriting of files and deleting! Unfortunately no syncronising though.

His conclution: that the server may have some bugs and Dreamweaver and other ftps I'd tried aren't very compatable with the said bugs, but rBrowserLite had the power to take them on!

I do believe that was a much simplified explaination as it was all going over my head, but I'm taking him out for a drink tomorrow to say thank you!

So to Timster a virtual pint I'm afraid but thanks very much! I'm sure you'll hear from me again soon!

My machead did a google search on the problem and found similar posts on other forums, I just might have to spread the word!
