As for me? Finding out AOL 7 is out just means (argh) AOL has my mailing address again, after years of CD free postal service.
Finding out Apple has put out a dual 1GHz machine, OTOH, gives me something to dream about at night.

How can you compare AOL's browser to a MAC? I don't get what you're talking about. AOL ain't got nothing on Apple!

Jokes aside, a friend of mine recently called for help to buy a computer for his 14 years old boy. I asked him what his son wanted to do with the machine before sugesting him to buy a Wintel box.
Even if my personal preferences goes for Macs, both platforms have theire own strengts and weakenesses. And a better choice can be made by knowing about them both.
Back on topic : What the Wintel industry have yet to produce to match the new Mac in performance and price is a 3ghz box for less than 3K$ and a stable OS.
The elegance is optional...

OK, mivox let's please try my point of view together, for 20 seconds. If it was 1K cheaper and shipped in a pizza box like the LC did, would you have enough of a 500$ budget to decorate it to your taste and party with the 500$ left?
Apple promises the dual-processor machine can perform an "amazing" 15 billion floating-point operations per second, or 15 gigaflops. According to Apple, this allows the machine to run Adobe Photoshop about 70 percent faster than an Intel Pentium 4 at 2 GHz. And encoding video is 300 percent faster, Apple claims.

Well if you are really into graphics, may be you need the new mac. But for me the AMD XP 1800+ with 1.5 Gig of DDR memory is plenty of power to run Photoshop 6.0, and Macs funky interface and its ridiculous round mouse is pathetic. And imagine sitting down and writing some serious code on mac?! That is rediculous!
Besides Mac is trying to control both the operating system and hardware, its like having two MS instead of one! I don't like any computer which I cannot put together by myself, like the PCs. I like chosing my own motherboard, memmory, etc and have an ability to recofigure one or all parts and not have to wait for a new box to come out like with MAC.
That is why I think Macs are the thing of the past, at best a niche market.
As with the code part, look online for a program called CODEWARRIOR. Great program. There is a lot more for you to learn about macs before putting them down.
Everybody hated them. That's why they were discontinued and replaced with a normal-sized oval mouse after the first round of production.
I think it's been at least two years since the round mouse was put to sleep... If you're going to criticize something, at least keep up to date on its shortcomings, eh? ;)
And, a lot of Mac developers do ther software development on... (drumroll) you guessed it: Macintosh computers! I've heard CodeWarrior is used for a lot of professional development... but as I'm not a developer, I really wouldn't know the market share numbers.
As far as the XP vs. OSX debate, I've never been a mac user, but I would rather buy OSX than rent XP any day.
