Just for those that missed it:

Today Apple released the first non-beta version of Safari.

[apple.com...]

Download it now! Can't wait to put it through it's paces....

Any early assessments? Opinions?

It seems much faster to me (and it was pretty fast before).

is it accepting gzip encoding yet? (that may be why it seems faster)

how about this bug: getElementsByTagName [dhtmlkitchen.com]

and the overflow tests: overflow bug test [dhtmlkitchen.com]

Come to think of it.... Safari DOES seem a little faster / snappier after the update.... amazing!

It is a little snappier. However, they still have not fixxed the home page bug. Every time you quit Safari and restart it, it looses your home page pref and reverts back to Apple's NetScape page. Maybe this was intentional on their part. I can't imagine it would be though. That would be really ballzy on Apple's part.

I dunno.... I find that this bug - if indeed that is was it is - to be remarkably inconsistent.

For a while there, I kept reverting after startup to Google, though I had definitely changed my home page preferences to AllTheWeb (much better, more stable at the moment IMHO). Annoying

NOW, however, my home page seems set - i.e. doesn't change from ATW, even after shutdown / reset / startup.

So, not sure whether it's a Safari bug - it may lie deeper within OSX perhaps.

Over to the developers.......! Let's hope they can solve this little mystery to the satisfaction of all concerned.

Myself, I'm still waiting for offline cache browsing and the ability to choose another default search engine in the toolbar apart from Google..... that and XSLT, SVG support, etc would be just perfect.

I've been using it all through beta, on and off (i'm often stuck on windows machines, where i use mozilla. mozilla and safari look similar in the tabs and such, but mozilla is so big and slow...) and I've loved it all along. The "open in tabs" thing for sets of bookmarks-- brilliant. My boyfriend had tried to write a Sherlock channel to do something like that. This is much better, and actually works.
I downloaded the new version right away. I just got a software update popup this morning telling me to download an update, which I think was just 1.0 again. Strange. Well...
I've got it loaded up and I haven't noticed much difference but haven't used it much. I'm just psyched it's officially out now.
With regards to the resetting the homepage bug, I haven't noticed. I haven't tried shifting it from the default because I'm very lazy; I just open it and hit my bookmark, and it goes right there.
My boyfriend, however, who actually owns the Mac I use, has had his homepage set to Google for months with no problem. He hasn't tried switching it since, though.
So I'll have to experiment with it.

(off-topic... I'm SO looking forward to Panther! I'm going to get a Mac of my own, but I'm waiting until closer to Panther's release date so i don't have to buy it. That would be obnoxious. Anybody heard for sure when Panther's coming out?)

drangonlady 7,

Anybody heard for sure when Panther's coming out?

I have looked all over Apple and the web. I can't find anything about a release date. There is a lot of talk that - speculation rather - it will release when the G5 releases, but nothing deffinate or specific.

It does look like there are some nice advancements. Looks like it is going to be a worth while upgrade; some previously unheard of whistles and bells - Apple or otherwise.

Re the release date of Panther.... I've seen a few vague mentions of "before the end of the year", which probably equates to a September - October release, similar to Jaguar last year...... I hope that means that we'll continue to see Safari upgrades at the same rate that we've seen so far - one of the great things about Safari has been the constant upgrades to reflect bug fixes and increasing application of standards. Keep up the good work guys!

Seems Apple has been really good about lots of updates in general; like regular iTunes updates, iMovie, Quick Time, System updates, iPod, Airport, etc.

However, I am still waiting for the iShave... and the iCoffee.

The new auto-tab feature for the bookmark bar is great. I just click one button and all my favorite WW forums open in their own tabs.

On a side note.. I had to work on a Windows machine for about two weeks. I don't know how I ever surfed the web without Safari.

That "Open in Tabs" from book marks feature is really cool. I had not tried it till just now.
