[apple.com...]

They finally dump Motorola and go with IBM's 64-bit G5. Whoohoo! No more MOT slowing us down.

Cool, but the shell looks like a scrap metal box. While performance rules all, I like a cool shell. I suspect this shell will keep things cooler though...

I have recently "switched" to PC because of price and internet peformance. I might just have to "switch" back to play with one of these bad boys!

It's already got a nickname... "the Cheese Grater".

That name was already used on the previous G4 model...along with "windtunnel" and "hairdryer."

We need a new and better name for this one. I'm sure the Mac folks will come up with something.

Wow, Apple and IBM and PowerMac! Who woulda' thought?

Now if we can get IBM to put OS/2 on this platform they could call it something like, hmmm, PowerPC.

Back to the future?

(Seriously, looks like they got it right this time.)

IBM could kill 2 birds with one stone by putting out a darwin based machine with the new processor; gets the SCO stuff addressed and opens a new market. I'd buy one.

I was always disappointed by the break up of the "AIM" (Apple, Motorola IBM) alliance. I had one of the Power Computing "Long Trail" clones on order when Jobs killed them. Maybe this series of machines will eventually meet those expectations.

It was getting FRUSTRATING how slowly Motorola was moving on releasing new CPU's!

Nevertheless, I see these first three models as very transitional machines. (And I would definitely avoid the $1999 model.) And remember these babies aren’t set to ship until "August."

However, we should all start setting aside shekels to purchase the NEXT (no pun intended) round of machines along with “Panther."

This is my first post to this forum. I am a former certified (certifiable?) Apple tech, former beta tester, a former Apple tech for a large educational system, former leader of Apple support for an ISP and web designer.

Truth be told, I’ve been making do with an old G4 450 AGP system running 9.1 because... it works. I mean seriously: with 1GB of RAM it’s stable, it runs as fast I can think of what to do next and I don’t have to buy all new peripherals.

Yes, I have OS X installed on one drive, but I don’t use it except for learning.

Once in a blue moon (“in your eyes”) I’ll try to create some obscenely huge page in Dreamweaver and will have to sit and wait, but that rarely happens. Even manipulating huge images in PhotoHog 7, this thing usually stays ahead of me.

Although, I admit, I saw where OWC has a $579 1.85 gHz CPU upgrade, and I was checking the balance on my Visa card....
