This is a problem my sister is having and I was wondering if anyone had run into it and to be honest I am not that familiar with OSX.

Her address book seems to be empty, yesterday it was fine and today it is gone. The only thing she did was uninstall eudore because it wouldn't import her mail from the OSX mail program and add some norton scheduler stuff (which has also disappeared).

She has tried to find the files. We looked at these

data.beforesaverecovered (from recovered files)
AddressBook.data.beforesave
AddressBook.data

and she tried to unerase some others but can't find anything with the full address book data.

Anyone have any ideas on how the address book and mail program are connected and possibilities of what other files to look for?

Did she gave the older beta of Safari browser a try?

No, what would that do?

Good then, there was a serious bug that could be the culprit.

I was asking to focus on a solution. I suggest she gives the Mac a rest for now.

Classic question, did she backup?

hehe, for the most part I think she is going to reenter the info. The little ibook is just a newborn so there really isn't much on it that can't be redone fairly quickly.

We are both just trying to better understand the nature of the way the mail and address book interact and how/where things are stored.

She's in Montreal so maybe you could just swing by oh great Macguru ;)

yep, too bad, but she says if he's tall dark and handsome... the answer is no bf ;)

She mentioned that once again that the backup theory keeps getting drilled into her head. Rebuild and carry on.

any suggestions on what email program works best with OSX or is it just the regulars?

Any that can integrate with the OSX mail system and address book?

I am using QuickMail Pro. A lot of people like Entourage, but it's far from free.

P.S. My GF tells that I am tall dark and handsome. ;)

Hi, I'm Jatar's sister.

I have entourage but have never used it (I will admit to being wary of all things Microsoft). I have been toying with the idea of changing email client's anyway, since I was having trouble with attachments in OSX mail. Is quick mail pro any good? I was going to switch to Eudora (I used it in OS9 and loved it) but wasn't too impressed that it wouldn't let me import from osx mail.

I would have worried about my address book too, but since its now empty...

(Macguru, you can tell your gf she's a lucky girl! ;) )

Hi straysparrow,

Good to connect dots!

I have been using this mail program with no problem whatsoever, with attachements and else.
I am satisfied with it, but mainly use plain vanilla text emails. Maybe other members have better suggestions.

Can you please describe the problems you had with Eudora? If you are used to it, there is maybe a quick fix out there.

You are the judge! As you can see on this pic [vif.com] she needs glasses, and I am the lucky guy! :)

Well, I didn't have too many troubles with the program per se. I was going to give Eudora a trial run and see if I liked the x version. I didn't actually get too far into using it. I wanted to import my address book and my mailboxes from applemail and there didn't seem to be any way that I could do that. Once I realized I might have to manually add in all my addresses again, I was a bit less enthousiastic about the whole thing.

I was going to try a third party importer. But I wasn't too sure which one to use, and I was pretty busy with some other stuff, so I didn't really pursue the issue.

(nice picture btw!)

straysparrow:

This happened to me also. When I restarted my mac, I opened the mail ap. In your toolbar, click on "Mailboxes" which slides a panel out (either right or left side) showing yoour mailboxes.

Now scroll to the top to make shure that "my mac" is highlighted, because all of your mailboxes should be a subsidiary of that. If not, click on anything that shows up to see if your mailboxes got re-distributed as a "sub" of something else.

I used to use Eudora under OS 9.2.2 until something corrupted the Eudora apl. and wiped out close to 200 mailboxes and e-mail addresses. I was only able to recover about 50. So far I've had only one problem with the Apple mailbox system, and come to think of it, it was after I downloaded the Safari beta. Hmmmm, maybe I'm going to eliminate something ....pronto.
