If my old business phone number gets lost or dissconnected...


Let's say my old number was:

111-1111

but that number is gone...

Could I simply use 222-2222 and re-verify the new number regardless of what was in there before?

Yes, you can change your phone number and get it verified.

You can login to your Google places and update your phone number. Once the listing is verified you should not have to re-verify because of a phone number change.
