Flickr launches new geotagging features - mashup with Yahoo Local

Flickr launched a new service allowing people to associate photos with maps

Did anyone notice Flickr's launching of geotagging features this week? They mention it at their blog:

[blog.flickr.com...]

Aside from the initial problems in keeping up with the influx of usage of the new service, the features seem very strong.

From my perspective, this would appear to be the critical-mass point of converging Image Search, Local Search, and Maps. Geotagging of images isn't at all new, nor is posting of images on maps, but having a very popular service launch this feature may propel geotagging into the mass consciousness.

What effects might this have on Local Search? Any thoughts?

It might depend on whether users post pictures of things that other users search for.

A PS to the above... if people start searching for iconic geo-targeted images, like landmarks or scenery, there would be an increase in geo-targeted and contextual advertising possibilities.
