Google has announced Let's put our cities online [gybo.com], an initiative to help local businesses get their presence online.

anallawalla - Thanks for posting this. Interesting that though StartLogic (as part of this package) is offering free sites to help local business, when I look at the portfolio on StartLogic's own site, many of the designs displayed appear to have some of the same problems that many current local sites do... all graphics, with no html text or useful information on the home page.

Beyond local business, it would be great to improve the presence of local government sites online. State, county, and local government in the US over the years have been absolutely disgraceful. I've seen problems on the biggest city and state sites all the way down to small local communities.

Many non-profits have problems as well... even the big ones... and (when they're built on WordPress) these are often the sites that get hacked. Oddly, when you talk to these folks in person, and even in some cases when you volunteer to help, you simply don't get any follow up. I remember it took my health plan about a year to assimilate feedback and redirect their old domain to their new one.

It's good to see Google taking a shot at it... but I don't know how much those pictures of smiling neighborly folks shaking hands reflect the realities.
