I want to jump into Linux but am afraid of losing files I already have on XP. I want to get an external hardrive to back up my files but I don't know which ones are compatible with both XP and Linux.

Please let me know if any of you know.

Thanks

I'd guess that nearly all external drives would be supported in XP, and *MOST* would be supported in Linux (Never versions).

I would recommend, though, that the easiest way to go about it would be to buy yourself another hard drive (An internal one - of reasonable size if you're installing RedHat <grin>), and install your Distro onto your new drive.

Then Set up your dual-boot system. I've done this many times, and I find it much safer than both OSes residing on the same physical disk.

You'll still be able to read/write your files on your XP disk from linux, and you'll be able to read them from Windows with something like Explore2fs [uranus.it.swin.edu.au].
