I have just downloaded the book and the packages needed to try "linux from scratch". Has anyone else ever tried this out? And if so where the results worth the time and effort?

My main goal is to build a system that only has the software that I will need (less system bloat) and to get to know the operating system inside out.

I think the only way to truely know what makes linux tick it to try and build your own, so I am going to take a dive in at the deep end and see how it goes.

Anyone else care to share their experiences?

Mack.

I tend to agree with you hear. I plan on doing this soon, as I have a # of friends with 1GB hdd and building a Linux desktop from distros (though old mandrakes work) to fit said size is tricky taking into consideration their ineptitudes.

I'm curious how you succeed, let us know how it goes. I'll state my success record once I finish.

mack, it's awesome, and at the end, you'll be swearing about compiler incompatibilities, kernel sizes, and you'll have lots of software preferences. :)

It's very fun to try once (if you're a geek, like me!), but after that, I find it much more effecient to install something like gentoo where you can get the best of both worlds: fully installable and configurable from scratch, but none of the packaging headaches.

BTW - be sure you're doing this on a secondary computer that you won't need for a few days. :) Good luck: And be sure to post your distro on the Internet so others can try it!

Tried "Linux From Scratch" loved it, then tried Gentoo ---!

Gentoo has build scripts that allow packages to be built from scratch, ie all the benefits of LFS but no need to work out all of the little quirks required to install!

Mack,

Can you post or sticky me the link to the book/libs - I'm interested in taking a look.

Thanks,

TJ

D'oh - I see "linux from scratch" is actually a brand, not just an expression you used...... found it ;-)
