just did a top on our server and i was able to watch as one of the httpd processes went up to 99.9%

well i panicked and restarted apache. then i went and turned off mod_gzip which i think might be causing the problem.

what should i really have done instead of hitting the panick button?

cheers

Figure out which site is driving is up high. Make sure its the latest stable version of apache. Then make sure that your sites arn't being DoS attacked. On Friday of last week the server was using 120% CPU upon start of apache, it turned out it wasnt apache itself but mySQL because one of my phpBB sites was being DoS attacked. :)

eliteweb,

>>figure out which site is driving it up high?
how do i do that - we only have 20 virtual sites.

one of these sites does have a very popular phpBB though... so maybe we are being dos attacked too... what exactly does that mean, and how do i find out if it is mysql and not apache

sorry for all the counter questions, but i'm rather new to *nix ;-)

many thanks
