configuring linux with 2 NIC cards

At this point, I've got two working network interface cards (NIC's) in my linux box. I can send and recieve from both of them, but there is a problem with the settings on the 1st card that I let Mandrake 8.0 autodetect.

I've tried changing the DNS servers by hand in the etc/ppp/resolv.conf file, and also in linuxconf, but to no avail. Everytime they revert back after I do a network restart.

I've looked around, and I can't figure out where the settings are located, that I could change, and they would stay that way.

I can check the settings on the cards by typing ifconfig and I see everything is as before.

I even tried going back through roaring penguin, but when I put in the new DNS info, it didn't work either...is there some othe place to edit this info that would make the changes permanent?

This all sounds sooo familar. I went through the same thing a year ago. Darned if I can remember what I did to get it to go. Any luck yet?

he he, /etc/resolv.conf...yep, edited that a few times.

I went to the roaring penguin set up, and tried to say assign the dns servers myself, instead of having them dynamically assigned, but it still seems to be doing that. I've put the correct settings for dns servers in the resolv.conf file, and they get overwritten.

I'll check out those links. I think I might try another reinstall, and then try assigning everything by hand.

If you are using a (two) NICs, why bother with ppp (/etc/ppp/....)? Barring interesting configurations, ppp is only used for serial (modem) connections.

Someone else pointed out /etc/resolv.conf, which looks like the winner.

Okay, so the ppp directory shouldn't even be there?

I'll go back and try some more things. I am beginning to think that I should touch anything gui in Linux, at least as far as configuring some new hardware.

It's the auto detection that ahem, made the machine go batty. If I can't figure it out next go round (when I do an install for the last time I hope) I'm going to have to revert back to winders 2000. At least that way, I had a working lan, and 2 pc's connected to the net. Best I've been able to do with the *nix box is connect it without the PC, and I haven't been able to get both cards to work well enough to even get to the step of setting up the lan.

Oh, well. I guess this is what I get for trying to thwart the evil empire. I hope the force stays with me on this next round, or I'll be turning to the dark side :)
