I wasnt pro anything, just looking for opinions.
I agree that the hiring of IT staff etc to set up and administer any *nix could well out cost the Ms product.
Could also be said that people most likely to use servers are IT related, and would be more than able.
Swings and roundabouts perhaps. :)
A lot of the focus has been on cost...Just because its free doesn't mean it doesn't cost anything to run.
..results by reasearch firm IDC found Windows won on most counts, with Windows making savings from lower staffing costs.
Linux tries to make money by selling support and services rather then code.
I think Im allowed to quote that much.It was an independant survery (here it comes), that was sponored by Microsoft, but it makes sense. They give a bit of the rundown of the prices of some enterprise platforms, and the control of source code.
But as the industry grows and as more people (like me who have to use unix at Uni) get familiar with the UNIX envioroment it will need less support to run Unix, linux and its distro's.

Wrong. Unix was the first major platform to be adopted. Unix was the choice of Bell and Bell pays more per hour for support than any other company on the planet. More hackers are familiar with UNIX than any other platform on the planet.
More security issues occur in UNIX than any other platform on the planet. It requires lots of support because it is robust, not because it is a bad platform. It has more security issues because it is robust, not because it is poorly designed.

One thing that W2K has going for it, and against it, is that there are _many_ people that understand the interface (Because it's windows). Theirfore there are many people that say they can admin the machine. So you are likely to find cheep labour in W2K land but that does not mean that it's good support. Good support will still cost you.

What would be interesting is a study to see if W2K could even do the job that unix does for them and if so what the cost (hardware, software and support). Maybe Bell pays the most for support since they require the most support. Though a study like this would not be able to be funded by M$ or any Unix vendor.
just my 2cents.
