Linux 7.2 start-up question!

Can't get to the graphics page!

Hi All

I just completed my first install of RedHat Linux 7.2 “server only”…on a 200mgh intel 32mg ram PC. This is a practice machine and no other OS resides.

After initial login...this shows up >>>[name@localhost name]$. Nothing I do will allow me to get by the latter…I read on one of the message boards, to get to the graphics home page you type in startx, I also tried start x to no avail. I’ve read all the how-to’s and can’t find any answers to a remedy.

Can some one direct me?

By the way…do you folks mind newbie questions here?
Thank you much, Michael

Do you have X installed?

IT may not get installed if you select 'server' type installs. Try this :

rpm -qa¦grep XFree

If you don't get any results, X was not installed.

I only choose "server" with the intitial install.

after I typed "rpm -qa¦grep XFree" this came up>> XFree86-libs-4.1.0-3 and XFree86-xfs-4.1.0-3 then [name@localhost name]$ again.

Doe's that latter mean I should go back and install X?

Thanks marcs, I appreciate your time!

Doesn't look like you have X itself installed, you should see at least an entry for XFree86-4.3.0-2 (version number could be different, of course).

So yes, it appears you need to install X first.

try "startx" to start X :)

A server install doesn't start in graphical mode. You wouldn't want it to.

Also with a server install it will be a very basic X if that command works.
