Hi all.

Just got into this linux game :)

Ive found the two sites offering the kernel mods etc to get the modem working, but being a newbie havent tried messing yet...

Anyone done this?
easy/hard?
did it work?

Hi Ade,
I've got two systems running on the Speedtouch USB - one running RedHat 7.2, and one running RedHat 7.0 (on a 2.2 kernel). Both run fine without problem.

If you follow the guides on sourceforge under the project linux-usb, you should find yourself with a running setup.

Easy? Hard? Well, you'll probably need to know how to compile a kernel and edit some files, but it's relatively straightforward. And if you should run into trouble, well, thats what this board is for isn't it? ;)

One point - You might want to make sure the connection works under windows first so you know there's no problems between you and the ISP.

Don't forget to firewall!

I've printed all the instructions to do the job (adsl works fine with windows - had it a while)

My first kernel mod but its worth a go, won't learn anything if I don't give it a go! Got a day off tomorrow so will let u know the results..!

Good luck Ade hope you don't have any problems, but imagine as I find with computers, nothing works right the first time. Fortunately my Speedtouch does work with unix now, albeit under a different flavour - Mandrake.

failed somehow but not surprised!

ive just ordered mandrake 9.0 powerpack which apparently works out of the box with the speedtouch... so will keep my fingers crossed :)

I am pretty sure Knoppix can do this. I have used Knoppix on a USB ethernet adapter and on a ADSL line. It worked for both well, but I didn't try it at the same time.

If you do the hard drive install you will have a pretty cutting edge Linux system with most goodies enabled.

Just installed Mandrake 9.0, and yes the speedtouch worked straight away and access to my windows drives which i couldn't get working in redhat....

All in all very impressed with the ease of Mandrake :)

But some service providers give you a package when you sign up, which includes the Alcatel Speedtouch USB. Why spend another 100 notes on something if what they give you will work just as well?
