MYSQL sock error

Cannot connect to mysql

I recently installed php, mysql and phpmyadmin on my linux box. The install was carried out from the suse cd rom using the yast2 utility. when I access phpmyadmuin it says
"cannot conect to mysql /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock (111)

Any ideas. I have tried altering the permitions of the mysql folers and the "sock" file.

Did you check out A.2.3 Can't connect to [local] MySQL server Error [mysql.com]?

The most important thing to check: Is there a mysqld process running? This got me several times already ;).

Yep tried that...still the same issue :(

When I made the install from cd rom it did not ask me to create a user or password? is this normal?

Usually the installation script will create those for you.

Use

ps -A u ¦ grep mysqld

to see as which user mysqld was started and the effective uid and gid.
