It isn't really all the tricky to do. What I ended up with is a 209 mg mini CD that I could fit in my pocket yet still had a lot of the apps I like to use . I started out with an already stripped out version of Knoppix, found at ftp://ftp.es.debian.org/pub/miniKnoppix . The author of that did a really nice job of chopping down Knoppix, but he left in KDE3 which leaves little room for much else.
I stripped out KDE and put in some apps I'd rather have:
Abiword + English spell check
Phoenix (apt-get version)
Flash player (sitting inside Phoenix)
Mplayer
Emelfm
Vim
Flite (small text to speech utility)
gftp
tinyirc
Gkrellm
XPilot (interactive shoot'em up net game)
The Gimp
Xchat (fancy gui IRC client)
Gaim
Fluxbox
Anyway, with that mini CD, I got everything I need to get my work down, or to do a little playing. I think I am going to try to make a 50 MB business card size one next.
I wanted a rescue CD that could load up in a ramdisc everything I need to fix a system. Started from a copy of Slackware 8.1 and ended up with a 22MB filesystem with mc, parted, fdisk, and a few other useful apps.
I'd recommend reading a few HOWTOs before doing something similar, like the Linux from Scratch and From Power-Up to Bash.
I'm using Debian now so I might try to cut down Knoppix one day, besides I have the 31 Oct 2002 snapshot.
How about a remotely accessable system, its a shame they don't have a free demo or trial;

( i should know, i run the site ; )
Yes remastering is a lot of fun. Also great is Knoppix Persistant home, which lets you store your home directory in a file on a partition ( even fat32 as it's a file mounted loopback ).
I am just working on a Knoppix version with kde 3.1 :)
Eaden, small world huh? Nice site btw.
I'll give it a try but when I run a rescue CD I want it to be as close to running a real system with root privileges as possible. It doesn't make sense for me to run something similar regularly.
b.t.w. if anyone wants to remaster knoppix, knoppix_lite is a good starting point ( only 200M with kde )
I will be releasing a remaster soon, with KDE 3.1 :) 3.1 is so nice :)
Littleman, I'm not so enthusiastic about the nightly builds... Last time I used a CVS snapshot it was an early source of KDE 3.1. A lot of it compiled but now I woudn't use a KDE other than a stable relase, on the other side I've been using a CVS version of licq for months without any problems.
I guess it depends on how many developers test it and probably how much is the source, anybody here tried the snapshots. I think I'll give a try to [lnx-bbc.org...]
KDE 3.1, I'll have to download your iso if you make it available.
I have made it available :) ( As well as redesigning my site )

The official one should be out before 12th March.
