setting up ODBC JDBC on linux

I'm interested in doing more than cheesey Java applets....

I have a legacy box with RedHat 7.3 and a MySQL db.

I'd like to learn how to set up ODBC on my legacy box and then connect to it using my Eclipse editor in Java.

Does anyone know of a good site that talks about this.
