I don't know much about openSUSE, how does it compare to other offerings such as (K)ubuntu?

openSUSE, which belongs to Novell since a couple of years, is with Ubuntu and Fedora the most starter-friendly distribution, really easy to handle and has with version 10.3 became much faster and more reliable. It's definitely worth checking out.
