The background Microsoft commissioned and independent analysis by IDC of the Total Cost of Ownership for Microsoft servers vs Linux servers. Microsoft published the results. Some ardent Linux fans have cried 'foul'.

The author of the study Dan Kusnetzky was interviewed. The article can be read at the link above.

The big news I felt is that Linux is much closer to matching Microsoft's TCO than many Microsoft diehards (including me) might believe.

hm. most of the cost is the training of staff / education related, when the linux choice is made ( and they compared lots of distros).

Interesting. So, you'd have a more technically profiecient organization, etc. for only slightly more money than microsoft stuff.

But for web services, it shows linux to be 6% cheaper. :) In other words, for most of the people reading here, I'd bet that linux makes the most sense for the server platform of choice then.
