Hi all,

Since samspade.org seem to be having some problems, can someone tell me how to do a whois by IP address?

Thanks....

If you can get your hands on a shell with an internet connection, the command-line whois client is one of the most useful tools I've ever used. At least on my Debian systems, whois just always hits the right server or servers for any request without me needing to do anything more than provide the query. It's great. Older versions of the client weren't always so great at guessing which server to hit based on the query, but current ones let you be very lazy. :)

Or you could just go to any of the Domain registry company's web sites and do it from their web page.

for example:

Verisign/Network Solutions/Etc.
[netsol.com...]
or
Register.com
[register.com...]

(not affiliated with either)

Réseaux IP Européens
whois 123.23.23.122@whois.ripe.net

American Registry for Internet Numbers

whois 123.23.23.122@whois.arin.net

Latin-American and Caribbean IP Address Registry

whois 123.23.23.122@whois.lacnic.net

Asia Pacific Network Information Centre

whois 123.23.23.122@whois.apnic.net

depending on where the ip address registered.

If you are behind a firewall make sure you allow outgoing/incoming tcp packets on port 43.

Nick - that's exactly what I do. I get all sorts of juicy information about netblocks and delegation of each sub-section of the netblock that the IP I asked about is in.

andrew@bundy:~$ uname -a
Linux bundy 2.4.18-bf2.4 #1 Sam Mär 30 00:56:06 CET 2002 i586 unknown
andrew@bundy:~$ whois --version
Version 4.5.24.

Report bugs to <md+whois@linux.it>.
andrew@bundy:~$ whois 67.38.128.147
Ameritech Electronic Commerce AIT-ADSL4 (NET-67-36-0-0-1)
67.36.0.0 - 67.39.255.255
Andrew Dingman SBC067038128144020430 (NET-67-38-128-144-1)
67.38.128.144 - 67.38.128.151

# ARIN Whois database, last updated 2002-11-11 19:05
# Enter? for additional hints on searching ARIN's Whois database.
andrew@bundy:~$

My desktop system, running 'unstable' rather than the stodgy old 'stable' that the above system is running, gives even more information than that. Unfortunately, since I left for work that system is suddenly no longer accessible from the network. (I suspect the cat pulled out the ethernet card. She often unplugs the keyboard, so it's not much of a stretch... )

<added>Ethernet cable. I meant "cable", not card. I don't think she could take the case off if she tried.</added>

<added again>The above works for me on IPs registered with APNIC and RIPE as well.</added>

Habe you tried the whois at www.geektools.com. Performs searching across multiple whois servers. Saves a lot of time. Additionally, there downloadable open source code so you can run it locally.

Instead of using whois, you could host your own whois database. I wish this helps.
