Every other sector of the technology sector has been suffering a financial downturn, so why not Linux? Only Intel, Microsoft and Oracle with their large cash reserves seem untouched.

Larger companies tend to use Microsoft products. Why? They work and they work well, and they are supported. Yes, MS has it's issues, but the benefits, to someone running hundreds, thousands or tens of thousands of systems, are enormous.

It looks like OSX and Linux are quickly growing out of the "alternative" moniker.
With OSX being a relatively new OS, it looks like considerable strides are being made, a few years could make a major difference.
