problems with my

win 98 machine...

I realise this isn't exactly the theme of this thread but here goes...

I recently bought a new pc with windows XP and moved my other system to another room.

Few weeks later I decided to link the 2 systems up so that I could use PWS in the older machine because it isn't supported by win XP.

I bought the network cards, cables and a hub. Installed the cards and wired it all up. All seams ok on the machine running XP but the box running 98 has developed problems. I install the card and the driver. When I use the network set-up disk (created in XP for other non XP systems) it will not complete the set-up. It runs then says in needs to install some new software. It installs then re starts and tells me I need to install my network card before I can complete the set-up??? When I go into device manager and click on my network card it says, "device is working normally" when I try and reinstall the driver for it I select "chose location" browse to “A” drive and it scans and comes back with "c\windows\system..." why does it find that when I selected "a" drive??? When it sometimes does find the driver it asks me to insert my windows 98 disk. I do this click on ok and it asks again... it will not run the disk no matter how many times I try. I assume there is an internal problem with the unit… Any ides what?

One more thing I recently carried out a format of “C” drive and when I was re-installing the OS the system would not run the Windows disk. It refused to run any CD ROM that I inserted. I had to go to BIOS settings and select the boot order to boot from CD ROM. Could this be the cause of the problems? Is there something I need to fix in BIOS?

I'm interested in this answer too. I have a win98 desktop and a winXP laptop. The XP laptop will recognize the 98 drives but the 98 won't recognize the XP. Network cards were factory installed by Dell (both machines are Dell's) and I've gotten the correct hub and cables. What gives?

To the best of my knowledge there is no way for Win 95/8 to see a drive that is NTFS. If your drives are FAT then there's supposedly no problem.

Ok i managed to solve it...it was a faulty cd rom...that why the drive wasnt working...i eventualy mnaged to get xp and win 98 linked up ok...you need to make a setup disk on the xp machine and run it on the win 95/98 machine...you will also need your origional win 98 disk cos it asks for it to install some files..i used xp as host and conect that to netr..other pc conects to xp machine through a hub. hub and network cards i used where netgear.
