Thats the noise of me plunging into the linux pool.

Mandrake 8.2 on a redundant Pentium 200 with 128M ram - works slow but OK - sharing a cable connection with my XP box without any major problems.

No idea what I am doing yet, but at least it installed OK

Once I learn how to swim its going on my main machine with win4lin or some such to help me survive.

Welcome from a fellow learner
I have linux (Redhat) in dual boot modus on my main machine for a few weeks now. Once I got through the nuisance of configuring my adsl connection I rarely booted Windows again.
If it weren't for my new habit of listening to web radio combined with my temporary inability to get XMMS or Realplayer working, I'd sure be a Linux only guy by now.
Also, I'm not sure if I'll be using Qanta a lot...haven't really found my html tool for linux yet.

Heini, try downloading the later real player from here [scopes.real.com], grab the libc6 i386 rpm version.

You may need to remove the older version first, because the Real rpm may not remove it for you.

4eyes, with a P200 and 128M of ram KDE is going to feel pretty slow. If you want something that feels sort of like windows you may want to check out ICEwm [icewm.org]. You should be able to easily via your package manager. If you give ICE a try also install icepref, it is a nice configuration utility.

Last night I upgraded (reinstall) to 8.2, then got greedy and went for kde 3, haven't got that working yet.

I am OK with KDE - the P200 is just for a learning experience before I put it on my main machine.

I am just checking out the Linux web design options at present - very surprised at the results - will post new thread tomorrow.

That is well said. Enjoy the water, the longer you are in the harder it will be to get out.
