I've been lurking on WW.com for a while but I've never posted anything so this is my first post. I figured I'd post it in this category, even though it's not a question about UNIX. Please, feel free to move it if it doesn't belong in this category.
The thing is, I'm planning to start a website with general UNIX information. Therefore, I'm looking for suggestions to what features you UNIX zealots would like to see on a site like that.
Since my main interest in this area is commercial variants, vintage or current, I've decided to let the site backbone be a large database with information about UNIX and UNIX-like systems, complete with version history, screenhots and descriptions.
Now, a nice database doesn't build a complete website, so I was wondering if any of you have suggestions for more features?
I was thinking maybe a howto-section, maybe a library with hard-to-find articles? And also, I had an idea about a 'testbed' feature where people could telnet to emulated versions of really old UNIX variants and play around. What do you think of that?

Both excellent. Definitely include a newbie section (how-to install, how-to audio, how-to network ...) and a security section (how-to harden, how-to defend, things to look out for ...) and an upgrade section (sendmail (!), bastille ...).

Hoooee ... that would be a neat trick if you could somehow establish some kind of security ...
Like the idea, though, especially if it ends up human-readable and without most of the holes most documentation ends up with. How about a wiki?
When you get a domain for the project you may want to remember that the UNIX name is trademarked.. Not sure if they still enforce it.

Yes I've thought about using a wiki. There's actually a swedish UNIX wiki with a lot of entries, but it's not very indepth. Haven't seen one about UNIX in english though. How do you get people to write good things in a wiki anyway? It seems like a perfect playground for people who like to screw things up for others. Also, I read somewhere that wiki's convert really lousy AdSense-wise. Obviously, I'm not doing this for money, but a little back for your efforts isn't a lot to ask.
I like the telnet idea, sounds like a security nightmare though. You could of course have the users running around inside a program that pretends to be a unix shell instead of giving them real access.
Well, I think I'd manage to get it quite secure. The systems would be running in an emulator with no network access except inbound. Also, since they run in an emulator, I could have a fresh replacement image ready if someone makes a mess. It's just a thought though, but I believe there are a lot of people out there who'd like to try for instance UNIX V7.

I already got the domain, and yes it contains 'unix'. I'll probably go ahead and use it and change it if needed. For the record, the swedish unix wiki has a domain containing only the word 'unix'. (I'm not allowed to post URL's here, right?)

I think this type of section would get a lot of traffic, and Ad Sense clicks!
For instance, simple tutorials on how to FTP, how to chmod, how to recognize and understand what we mean by file permissions (a Windows person has no clue when we say change it to 755)
Explain .htaccess and how to see hidden files in your FTP tool, umm, sell FTP tools?
