ATL L500 with DLT 8000 Drives

I'm trying to write a script that will tell the ATL Tape Library with a DLT 8000 Drive when it's out of room on the tape to unload current tape and load next tape. This is on an IRIX system I'm getting nothing can anyone help me? I'm out of Ideas.
