I installed a debian system without installing X (wanted a minimal install). I also didn't know the video chip.

Now I want to install X and do not know what I should do to set it up. I want to use the kdm interface.
Any suggestions? Do I get the package XFree86?

I am installing it on a i815 onboard videio chip on a Compaq deskpro and I tried to select i810 but it didn't work. Any suggestions on what to select? How can this be done after the X install.

Also, I need to change my mail settings and wondered if there was a way to do that without a gui?

Thanks

hi csross,

i found the easiest way to get my desktop and graphic working was to boot into knoppix and copy the X config files back to debian.

i can heartily recommend knoppix as a pain-free debian installer

good luck
