i'm a *relatively* competent redhat user. our server runs redhat 7.2. i can configure most programmes, write cronjobs and simple admin shell scripts, check and grep logs, etc - typical server admin stuff.
we are just about to upgrade our server (new hardware, etc) and are offered choice between debian and redhat enterprise.
i would like to go to debian, the whole enterprise redhat network doesn't really appeal. but i don't have much time to invest in learning a different flavour of *nix..
..so my question is... is the switch easy? will it be a matter of installing debian on my dev box at home and within a few days i'll be up to scratch? or is the learnign curve steeper?
(i already admin a RHEL box, so there is no learning curve for that)
thanks for feedback!
.. what a nightmare ;-)
until i discovered knoppix - i am now installing woody using koppix and debootstrap - i can't express enough admiration for the way knoppix works!
But making a move to Debian is a good idea.
If you're comfortable with RH7.2 then i see no trouble with Debian. So the move should be pretty smooth.
All the best!
welcome to webmasterworld and thanks for the reply!
i'm playing with debian on a separate partition at home at the moment and it looks fine. i spent 6 hours on sunday just to get the latest version of php installed ;-)
(after countless failed "./configure with imap and ldap" - i finally worked out how to backport it from dotdeb ;-)
