samba configuration

can't access localhost port 901

I installed what sounds like a pretty neat piece of networking software for linux, but after installing, and attempting to access the gui through the Konqueror browser, I get an error that says it can't access localhost port 901.

I've been having trouble setting up my network, so I decided to backstep, and try to get the linux box to act as a server or something for the lan.

Anybody have any experience with this can point me in the right direction?

I'm not sure about the gui, but is samba actually running?

On my boxes it doesnt run by default, so I run

nmbd &
then..
smbd &

and then it runs fine, apart from configuring samba.conf.

Thanks for the tips.

Due to my unfortunate lack of linux installation experience, I'm now after 8 hours of frustration, reinstalling the thing, so I can detect my network settings automatically.

I installed a package this time called webmin, which you can configure graphically a lot of the server software (at least, that is what the description said when I marked to install it.) Perhaps that, along with your two commands, will get me going on that box.
