quick question

Does chmod a+w = 777
and chmod a-w = 666
?

I understand that 666 is -rw-rw-rw- but is it also a-w? I don't understand that part.

I'm just trying to change the chmod in ftp instead of the command line.

No.

a+w adds write ability to user, group, and other.

a-w removes write ablility from user, group and other.

"alphabet" format modifies permissions of existing files, while the "numeric" format overwrites permissions.

This is for a file in a script and the instructions for it said to do it from the command line but if you don't have access you can do it from ftp, so I figured a-w or 644 was pretty much the same thing. Seemed to work the same.
