reading and trading files between a pc and *nix

can it be done? how?

My ultimate goal for my home network is a windows box with a dual boot on it, so I can run linux as well. I've already set up the windows software on a part of the drive partition, and I'm ready to go with the install.

Problem is, I don't know how I'm going to be able to get to the internet, or get the files from the *nix environment back to the windows environment.

I've got sygate, which would work, but it's installed on the wrong machine, as it needs to act as a server on the box that is going to host the application...and that would be the windows box.

Do I a) switch the sygate app to the other box, and go at it,

or b) is there another way to share files between linux and winders?

For file transfers over the network, you can use samba [samba.org] on the Linux box, which basically fools windows machines into thinking it's an NT file / print server.

For transferring between partitions on a dual boot, most Linux distros will read and write quite happily to your windows partition, it looks like just another directory in your file system. I think Mandrake does this automatically, but you may need to set it up yourself (it's simple enough though)

sygate: I haven't a clue ;)
I do it the other way - the linux box connects to the net, and acts as the gateway for the windows boxes.

ahh, but my dsl provider doesn't support that (linux connecting and acting as a gateway). I live in upstate NY right now, and Verizon isn't the best dsl provider in the world. Granted there might be worse, I'm just not familiar with them :)

I'll have to loook into the reading/writing thing from *nix. I'm using Redhat Linux [redhat.com] so that's where I'm going to start looking.
