What boot loader do you have? For example Lilo or Grub Would it be easier just to edit your boot parameters? For Lilo it would be

LILO: linux 3

and for Grub you would choose the redhat boot and hit the e key then put 3 at the end of the 2nd line I think it is for redthat 7.2 it should look something like this anyway:

kernel /vmlinuz ro root=/dev/hda1 3

Then hit enter then hit key b

If you cant edit your boot parameters I would use the linux boot disk then edit /etc/inittab and change the default runlevel to 3, maybe there is an easier way but im not sure.

regards,
Mark

hi mark,

thanks for that, i had never bothered looking at the grub boot screen before :-)

i know to edit the /etc/inittab but i couldn't boot up to 5 cos my display didn't work - very frustrating! and i felt like one of those hit the monkey arcade games trying to press the I for interactive start up!

have now edited the inittab to give me more time to do that in future too ;-)

cheers
