I've heard you don't need much of a hog to run linux, but I don't want to get a system that's going to lag much during normal uses and possibly some multitasking.
Any suggestions based on the following:
From what I've read, I think I'd like to try the Debian distribution out. I also got FreeBSD on CDs after a MUD buddy of mine recommended it, and while I'd like to give it a try as well at some point, I think I'd rather get hardware that's going to work best for Debian.
I realize they have lists of supported hardware for the linux distributions, but I was hoping somebody could tell me "the least I need" and possibly the best chipset or if some company on the Internet makes cheap, low-end systems tailored for this type of thing. I'd rather not build one from scratch. I'm not sure if recommendations like this violate the TOS on here, but if they do if you could sticky mail me with a web site or recommendation I would appreciate it. Nothing really specific needed, just a couple pointers would be great before I make a purchase.
I've received a lot of help on here already and feel guilty asking yet another question, but I've had bad luck with hardware in the past and would really like to avoid making another mistake before putting out the little money I do have. Hopefully some time in the future I'll be able to kindness and help everybody has given me on here.
My system only cost me $500. If it's older I doubt there should be much of any trouble to get Linux to work.
