How can i config a webserver

i want to know how can i config a webserver on linux . What should i know and what should i do , please help me!

some one say : if i use Apache , user's link on my server will be
[myserver.com...]
is it right?

i only want
[myserver.com...]
how must i do?

ps: i'm just a vietnamese so in my post had some gramma mistakes ....hihi (sorry)...

You can set the users home directory to anything you want.

myserver.com/user is perfectly valid and will work....no need for the ~ (tilde sign)

You will need to have a fixed IP address to put the server on the Internet if that is what you're trying to do.

If you ony wnat the server to serve pages on your own network, local addresse in the 127.****.xxx.xxx range will be sufficient.

i don't know how to edit [server.com...] to [server.com...] (with apache) . some body help me please .!

If you have mod_rewrite enabled, something like this should work. Put it in an .htaccess file at /usr/home/.htaccess.

RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule  ^/~([a-z0-9]+)(.*) /home/$1$2

Look in your /etc/httpd/httpd.conf file for a "DocumentRoot" entry. See if the ~ character is part of the directory identifier. If it is, remove it and save the file.

Then do service httpd restart and see if it fixes the problem.

Before making any changes to your original httpd.conf file I would suggest doing a cp httpd.conf httpd.orig
to make a backup copy of the original file.

I am running apache under 8.1, it is possible the directory location for httpd might have changed for 9.2, so you might have to go looking for it.
