Will links to my 'homepage' from sites about blue widgets help the ranking of my www.mydomain.com/widgets/morewidgets/blue_widgets.html page?
or wont the blue_widget.html page on my site gain any benefit at all from the blue widget sites linking to my homepage? do they NEED to link to my blue_widgets page to help it in the search engines?
It's just it's going to be ALOT harder to get links to my blue widgets page than it will my homepage, but i guess it can be done. but if to my homepage will do the same job, i'm happy because i have NO trouble getting blue widget sites to link to it.

In terms of PR some of it will be passed on from your homepage but not as much as when sites link directly to the blue_widgets page...

hmmm... yes - links to your home will help a lower level page and more often than not reciprocators would rather have a link going to the homepage. However, a even distribution of links is much better... therefore providing a chioce to the website owner will likely get some wanting to deep-link directly to the page.

No. but by have multiple site locations where inbound links are clustered provides flexibility to developing good ranking results on page that are of higher competition.
Example: a link going to a page deep in your link hiearchy helps that page improve but also helps adjacent pages improve. As you get further away from this "link cluster" the affect are much less apparent. If links only go to your mainpage -- then pages two links away don't receive much help.
If someone links directly to your Blue Widgets page, chances are good that they'd include those words in the link text if you gave them a suggested wording (or even a cut-and-paste code snippet). This is A Good Thing when you're promoting blue widgets. A well-worded link can pack more punch than you'd expect just from the PR value.
There is a lot of evidence that Google parses "blue-widgets" as the two words "blue" and "widgets", while it parses "blue_widgets" as the single rather strange word "blue_widgets", i.e. it recognizes the hyphen as a word separator, but the underscore is merely an ordinary character.

Both are true Mohamed_E -- bots, crawlers, and spiders do not normally read non-alpha-numeric characters. In addition, some evidence of this can be seen in the archive itself like typing in "blue-widgets" in quotes does not list results only with hyphen or a bias to hyphens (or using underscore), as well typed-in words get bolded where as hyphen, underscore, commas, periods etc. do not.
