Can professional directories help link popularity?

In an effort to improve link popularity I had begun submitting to professional directories lists, but just realized that the listings are probably in a database and therefore won't be read by a spider. Can anyone advise about this?

Depends if their files are accessible by spiders. Are they stored in what appears to be .html files? Or are they setup with pages that are form style submissions?

If .html files then the spiders can find them, but if form style .cgi?form sumitted files, then that can't help since a spider can't find them.
