what makes a good link?

I am working on a site at the moment and looking to build up quality links for a commercial property site.

How can I tell a quality link?

Is it to be found on a busy site....or?

Exactly how does a search engine like Google and the others determine if a link to a site is good quality or not?

Is it a good thing if the site I am working on has lots of internal link (links to other pages on the same site) or should I make a sinlge page with text links to all the main pages?

Get the Google toolbar.

You can then see how Google ranks every page you visit....or have links on!

Thanks for the pointer will get it installed first thing tomorrow...

But a PR ranking happens after the page is listed....I was wondering how I know a link will be good and worht the effort

What Dazz means is checking the PR of incoming links.
So when you ask an other site for a link to yours you only want to ask those that are aa) related to your topic and bb) have some PR (although I say that aa)-sites are more important to me. bb) will follow).
For building your own link page (outbound links) you also should take care of not linking to bad sites (spammers, cloakers etc). Make sure that the link you provide on your page is helpful for your visitors and related (not competitve!) to your content/site-concept.

In addition to the G-Toolbar you could also try Alexa, where you get information about traffic, inbound links, related visits.
