Can anyone recommend a good/trustworthy backlink checker? There seem to be some seedy ones out there so hoping to avoid that ;)

There are some tools that depended on the Yahoo API for all or a part of their data.

They no longer have access to Yahoo's data after November 21st 2011 as it was shut down.

OSE looks nice! I started using one called backlinkwatch but something about it makes me feel uneasy. OSE looks more trustworthy

In my opinion, OSE is one of the best, is cheap and shows a lot of info, that is my first choice now taht Yahoo! blocked siteexplorer.

Out of curiosity...

SEO spyglass claims to have a new database of links that it has indexed. Previously they relied on yahoo site explorer for their link database.

Anyone have any idea what database of links they are using? I get the feeling that they DON'T have their own spiders crawling the web...

With alexa I only find the first 100 backlinks, can you find the rest?
Also backlinks from Alexa for one site are counted from sites that users are in Alexa traffic panel

ahref.com - By far the best link checker tool.

Open Site Explorer and Majestic SEO are the two best around. Majestic SEO is my favorite. Most tools these days like Market Samurai, Raven Tools, etc. pull all of their back link data from Majestic SEO since Yahoo! Site Explorer data is no more.

For a detailed comparison of the two leading backlink checkers, see article referenced in this thread...

Really... Majestic IS the source of date for market samuria... Majestic and Open Site Exporer (SEOmoz.org) are the two big resoures. ahref.com is a smaller player in the space.

Also, there's an *awesome* article at SEOBook comparing Majestic, OSE and Ahrefs:
seobook.com/comparing-backlink-data-providers [seobook.com]

Ahrefs - Use for link cleanup
MajesticSEO - Use for mentions monitoring
Mozscape - Use for accurate competitor/market analysis

I won't name any names. However, some tools associated with some SEO companies supply data back to the SEO company to help them rank their own sites or their client's sites against those using their tools.
