I've heard that Link Survey is good, does anyone have any experience of this particular software - or can anyone recommend any others?
The best way is really to check at the individual search engines, but there are tools out there, both online and available for download. We discourage discussing the individual ones so that we can avoid promotional posts which we then have to edit. But you can find a lot listed if you do a search at Google or Fast.
A search for the likes of "link popularity" yields good results...I use one of them in the top 10....very sparingly - about once a month. It is free, but as Marcia says, promo's are avoided.
If it was otherwise we'd soon find out how competitive forum spamming and link popularity search terms are I guess :)
