Do you mean triangular linking? If so, there was a long discussion on this topic not so long ago:
3 Way Triangular Link Exchanges [webmasterworld.com].
IT IS ABOUT AWARENESS AND MARKETING.
people are extremely stressed about avoiding 2 way links -- and fretting about the SEO issues - when in fact they can be very very beneficial in terms of general marketing and awareness of your site... and decent traffic flows. Often these benefits FAR outwiegh any SEO concerns.
In any case - a 3 way link trade is therefore less worthwhile - it does not drive traffic credibly to your site. You don't get the recommendation effect from a good site - and it is easily detected by search engines - so is no better than a 2 way link from an SEO perspective...

Really? I've never met anyone who was extremely stressed and I meet a lot of people at conferences where I speak on link development.
Here is what I see face to face: Many people prefer one way links because reciprocal links look cheesy, spammy and unprofessional. Site owners, especially corporations developing and selling a product, want to project a professional and trustworthy appearance to potential clients. A reciprocal link directory has generally not been an option for a serious business.
This is what has made link building challenging, and why third world linkers have hit on 3-way linking for their clients. It's something easy that they can mass-market and preserves the illusion of a one-way that the client demands.

In my experience that's a myth because a link in a typical link exchange page is usually hidden from site visitors. The link to a link directory is purposely hard to find. There is absolutely no traffic or marketing benefit to that.

Heh. What's wrong with a 2-way link from an SEO perspective?
